The Stellarium project was started by Fabien Chéreau during the summer of 2001 and used Sourceforge intensively. Stellarium is very simple to use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by beginners. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL, which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Stellarium is an open source desktop planetarium for Linux/Unix, Windows and macOS.

While Stellarium Portable doesn't include highly-detailed imagery and makes traveling from one point to another a bit confusing sometimes, it's also a very interesting app – as long as you like astronomy. Stellarium Portable also lets you add extra information to the image, such as a grid with parallels and meridians, constellation art based on mythological figures and cardinal points, among others.
